THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
The last day of school for grades K-8 will be Wednesday, 6/16. While there will not be a late start that day, it will be a half day- the schedule for arrival and dismissal will be as follows:
Group A Early Group – 8:15-11:25
Group B Late Group – 9:00-12:10
Bus students are encouraged to be out waiting for their buses 10 minutes earlier than usual in the morning. Buses will be dropping off approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes earlier in the afternoon.
STEAM OLYMPIAD
On Friday, the students in grades 3-5 participated in the annual STEAM Olympiad. It looked a little different this year, but for the first time ever we did our egg drop from the roof. All of the students were able to watch outside as their designs were tested. The students also participated in two other STEAM activities in their individual classrooms; marshmallow towers and Straw Rockets. The kids did a great job and there are many future engineers in the group.
FIELD DAY
Next Monday, Jun 14th, the students will all have a Field Day to end the year on a fun note. It will not be the huge day that we have gotten used to, but an hour of fun and competition with their classmates should be a blast! Please send them with some extra water and athletic clothing for the day! - Mr. Hutchings
HEALTHY HIGHLIGHTS
MEDICINE PICK UP: If at any point you have left medicine for your student it must be picked up...... YES, I will deliver to your car, if you call me first and tell me when you will be here; NO, I cannot give it to your child to bring home. I do need a signature at pick up and will have a pen ready for you. Please help me with this as soon as possible.
Do not forget immunizations...... they must be 100% up to date in order to attend school next year. ~ Nurse Sherwood
LIFE SKILLS
Ms. Gibbs' class had a great year of learning. Students learned about the Solar System, Ancient Civilizations, Natural Disasters and the United States. Students also worked on Reading Comprehension and Math skills. Students researched and learned about important people in history. Students also made tornadoes, slideshows, ziggurats, planets, biographies and autobiographies.
LINES FROM THE LIBRARY
Thank you for returning library books this week! If your book has gone missing, a bill was sent home on Thursday. Check those backpacks! If you can’t find the book, please send in a check to WCS to pay for its replacement.
Although you can no longer check out books from the WCS library, the Patten Free Library is gearing up for a great summer. There are many fun events taking place and cool prizes for students who complete a PFL reading log (check backpacks next week...summer reading logs coming home then). It is crucial that our students continue to read everyday over the summer. They work so hard during the school year to improve their reading skills; research shows that students who don’t read over the summer can lose as much as 22% of their reading level over vacation. If you and your child aren’t sure what to read, check out the Summer Reading website for suggestions. These are reading recommendations, not requirements!

GRADE 5 REFLECTIONS ON LEARNING DURING A PANDEMIC:
We should remember that working from home was a challenge, but we learned what we are capable of doing.
We now have some really strong tools (iXl & Lexia) that will continue to be great resources for learning.
We are lucky to have a nurse at school that was always ready to be sure we were safe and healthy.
Due to a shorter day, we had more time at home with family. This was nice.
The mask situation actually made us learn to speak up and ensure people hear us. Many talk quietly, and this was good to have to learn to speak up.
Even though it was an odd year, we still learned a lot.
Things like Art being different allowed us to do more projects day to day instead of once a week.
We are looking forward to field trips coming back into school experiences.
It will be nice to be with friends all day instead of missing people on buses and the like.
We are looking forward to multiple grades being at lunch and recess together, and sitting right next to anyone at lunch.
We are REALLY looking forward to not worrying about masks and distance. Seeing each other's faces and working in small groups is going to be really nice.
It is going to be great to interact more often while learning. Going up to the board, playing games, doing skits, etc.
MUSIC NOTES
The band students in 5-8th grade have done an amazing job sticking with learning their instruments through a screen!! Tuesday culminated in (FINALLY!) a whole school band rehearsal for grades 5-8 outside in the tent, where the students played beautifully together for the first time this week! We played long tones, double-checked fingerings and posture, notes and instruments, and actually played a few songs. Their pitch was superb for a first year group, and everyone watched and listened attentively. This is only the very beginning of what will become a powerful, moving group of students. I am so humbled to be a part of it! - Mrs. Joray
SECOND GRADE’S FOR THE BIRDS!
Second graders have just completed an intensive unit studying birds and their adaptations. Through the research process they learned to take notes from nonfiction texts, write reports and complete high quality projects. All three classes enjoyed a Chewonki presentation, "Owls of Maine," thanks to our wonderful PTA.

JUNE 14th: FLAG DAY
Flag Day (also called National Flag Day) a day honoring the national flag, is observed in the USA on June 14th. The holiday commemorates the date in 1777 when the United States approved the design for its first national flag. It’s also a time to remember and honor military men and women who defend our flag and our country. If you have worn and torn flags, you can take them to the Bath American Legion, they have a blue mailbox to put them in. The Legion will dispose of them properly.
