Phippsburg, ME (June 9, 2020) – Phippsburg Elementary School (PES) serves approximately 100 students from Pre-K to 5th grade within a small-yet-close-knit coastal Maine community. As the school year drew to a close last week, Principal Sandra Gorsuch-Plummer and her staff knew they wanted to find a way to connect with their students before sending them on summer break.
“One of our PES traditions is for the teachers to blow bubbles as the buses pull away from school on the last day, and another tradition is for PTA to give out freeze pops at field day,” Gorsuch-Plummer described. “Those ideas morphed into a bus parade where we blew bubbles and gave our freeze pops.”
On Friday, June 5, students and their families waited at bus stops across the town as PES staff boarded a bus decorated with balloons and a banner that read “PES Kids Rock”. The bus pulled up to each stop honking its horn while teachers waved pom poms and blew bubbles, wishing students a good summer. Gorsuch-Plummer said she handed out 115 freeze pops.
“There were a few tears, but they were all from parents. While this has been such a struggle for both teachers and parents, I think this whole experience has brought us all closer together,” she said. “I'm so glad that we did the bus parade. As I told my PES teachers, my heart is full.”
